Bulletin 22 (Day 32) - The longest day

Wednesday 8 October     Palandoken to Nevsehir      739 kms

From Palandoken we take the 1968 London to Sydney route to Erzincan, destroyed by an earthquake in 1939, now a modern farming town.  On to a lunch halt at Sivas, an old town devastated by many invading armies but now a pleasant place to be.  Onwards to Cappadocia, past the town of Kayseri and through the shadow of Mount Aergius to pass some of the amazing 'Fairy Chimneys' as well as some cliff dwellings.  Neveshir is our overnight halt and, if you are in early enough, you might take the short trip out to Goreme, a fairy tale place of underground cave dwellings and fairy chimneys.

Apart from some minor changes in places, the field remains unchanged after today's long, but straightforward run across Turkey and there is little to report.  In the top 30 there are no changes and nearly all runners were unpenalised, so the Jeep stays in front with a gaggle of younger cars waiting to pounce should it falter.

The Type 40 Bugatti of Germans, Walter Rothlauf and John Dick, which was well towards the front of the field during the early stage of the event, has being finding the latter stages of the great challenge increasingly difficult. To ensure  a successful arrival in Paris in ten days, the crew has, accordingly, elected to move to the Touring category which follows a more forgiving route with a less stressful timetable.

With total penalties now up to  35 days 15 hours and 58 minutes, the Bugatti slots into the new class in eight place.

It seems we can't shake of the alleged (and untrue) anti-Australian tag, for we failed to mention in the previous bulletin that there is, in fact, a third Australian car on the event apart from the Rolls-Royce Phantom and the 1964 Holden which is doing so well. The third entry is the Wolseley 24/80 of three-person crew Richard Sackerlariou, Andrew Snelling and Susan O'Neil. Andrew's sister, Joanne, emailed from Sydney to point out the omission of the 1965 machine which is running well in a strong 19th place. She too subscribes to the "no news is good news" school of rally reporting.
