The Peking to Paris Motor Challenge 1997
September 6 - October 18, 1997
Bulletin 11 - Fords in front
Friday 19 September Xeger to Nyalam (Choksam) 260 kms
A rough road and a tough day with possible off-road excursions along the valley of the Nien Chu, past Tingri and the best views of Mount Everest then a short climb past Xixapangma (26,300 ft) to the summit of the pass Lalung Leh (16,400 ft)
The road then descends very steeply into the bare valley eventually arriving at Nyalam (10,000 ft). Between here and the Nepal border landslides and delays, hence the choice of a night camping at Nyalam.
The road-blocking debris of the landslides that afflicted this road section last week has largely been cleared and all the cars that started from Xeger this morning reached the final control we are told. The majority were penalty free, but the most notable exception was the Buckingham Aston Martin DB5 (No 79) which dropped a whole 4 hours+ and fell from the joint lead back to 56th place.
This leaves the Broderick Ford Anglia (No 52) and the Catt Ford Cortina (No 50) in the joint lead with the Van der Laan Citroen 2CV still hanging in well in third place, just two minutes back. The two Ford Club Coupes are running well to hold 8th and 9th places, ahead of many younger and supposedly faster cars, some of which used today's mileage to go effect and moved back up the leader board..
The Rothlauf Bugatti (No 3), which previously ran so well, was another high profile car to have a troubled day and it has now slipped back to 69th after dropping more than a day in penalties.
Katmandhu and two rest days, is still more than 200 miles distant as the rally prepares to spend the second night sleeping under canvas.
We hope to get some longer, detailed information during the rest period.
