The Classic Safari Challenge 2011

15th August to 6th September 2011

Safari Diary from Drakensberg

August 31

We left the comforts of the Polana Hotel at Maputo for a drive out of Mozambique, through Swaziland and into South Africa, at last.

Our resting place at the end of the day was the Shishangeni Lodge in the Kruger national park.

There was time for an evening game drive and we saw more wild-life in half an hour than all the previous game-drives put together, including lion, lots of elephants, mating rhinos, crocodiles, zebra, and eagle owls.

A 5.0am start saw us crack the border out of South Africa into Swaziland, then a 180 kilometres north-south drive brought us all back into South Africa again, where we finished in spectacular fashion with a demanding drive up the twists and turns of the a valley that formed the film-set of the 1964 film Zulu, to the Cathedral Peak Hotel, where Stanley Baker, Michael Caine and the rest of the film set stayed while on location.

The Drakensberg Mountains all around make a spectacular view from the windows of our thatched chalets.

News of the day is that there were two Time Trials. The first was all gravel, about 10 kms long, and the second was a climb that zig-zagged up the side of a wooded mountainside, with gravel on the way down the other side.

Time Trial Medal winners at tonight’s prizegiving were...

Time Trial One: Vintageants, Jorg and Louis Lemberg in a Lagonda that was spitting out boiling water for most of the day; Classics Pre 66, Keith and Norah Ashworth, in their Mercedes 220 Fintail; Post 66 Classics, Manuel Enes and Alexandra Pombo, Volvo 164, and top 4x4 was Rob Kitchen and Gerard Brown in a Land Rover Defender.

Time Trial Two: Michael and Anne Wilkinson collected the medal for best Vintageant performance in their Alvis, Geoff and Jennie Dorey won the Pre 66 class in their Alfa; Jose and Maria Romao De Sousa won the Post 66 class in their Volvo, and the 4x4 Class saw medals going to Jorge Ruiz and Elvis Fogal.

We are dining out tonight on a remarkable spread (no less than 20 different cheeses on the cheese-board, and if that sounds boring, there are two different ice creams), with a chef cooking up noodles and other add-ons in a Chinese wok. One thing is certain, we have all eaten very well on this event ….and there is more to come when we reach the South African wine-region.

Tomorrow we have yet another border and spend the night in the Kingdom of Lesotho.
